Yesterday, I woke up around 10-10:30, got out of bed, and headed into the bathroom. The warm water usually takes a minute, so I start the shower and brush my teeth while I wait. The only problem is, this time when I turn the knob for the shower, nothing comes out. I check the faucet and get the same result...downstairs faucet...same. I look for any obvious notes from the wife to see if she had problems with it ut find nothing. So I am sitting here thinking that it is no big deal, the storm the previous night had probably busted a pipe somewhere and it will be up and running in no time. But I wanted validation.
I fired up the local news and radio stations' webpages and saw nothing. So I called the people we rent from. They had not clue at all and basically said if I still did not have water later that I could call and they would look into it. Still no validation. Finally, I decided to call the water company, only I could not remember the number. When I called the first time it was on the "utilities list" from our renter so I did not have to go looking. After playing phone tag for way too long, one of the people I called finally sent me in the right direction. And in no time at all, they informed me that the no one was signed up since August 11, and that our service was shut off on November 10. There was no record of my call in July to switch things over and they did not feel obligated to mention it to anyone when they came to the house to shut off the water.
She basically said that mixups sometimes happens with rental places and set me up with service. She scheduled someone to come out this morning to turn the water back on. The funny thing is I had just commented to the wife a few days prior that we had not yet received a bill from the water company. I had not put much thought into it because in one of the places we lived previously the bill only came every six months. I probably should have followed up on it though.
So, yeah, around 24 hours without water kinda sucked. Having to take a drive to use the restroom was annoying. Not being able to do dishes or laundry sucked. But the most annoying thing about all of it came this morning, kind of adding insult to injury in my opinion. The guy who came to turn the water back on decided that he needed to both ring the bell and knock realy loudly on the door. And yes, I realize that you might think no water and simultaneous ringing and knocking are not on the same playing field, but they are to me. I hate it when people do this. Hell, I hate it when people knock in general, but doing both gets under my skin. In my head I have already made the association that when the door bell went off this morning that it was supposed to be a savior bringing tidings of great joy. Instead, he basically beat me down with the wrench he used to turn the water on... or at least that is how I took it.
Oh well, another hour to let the water heater do its thing and I can start cleaning.
