Oh yeah, DST... - Annoyances - Site News
Posted on: 2009-11-04 15:33:00

I was all set to do a post about how great I was for hitting 12k in NaNoWriMo, which is about my first years effort, when I noticed the time on my last twitter post "2009-11-04 06:10:57". I didn't think I was still up at 6am, and then I remembered Daylight Saving Time. You remember DST right, the twice a year annoyance that forces people to arbitrarily adjust their clocks so we can save money in the long run even though we are actually spending more money...that one. Oh well, I am not going to rail on today about the absurdity of this biannual annoyance or how lame Indiana got when we decided to join in on the stupid...I have done that twice a year every year since we joined in on the stupid. You know, I started to write joke about how my DST rants were almost as regular as clockwork before realizing that it is our irregular clockwork that is my problem.

Deep breaths.

Anyways, I noticed the time seemed wrong, and DST was probably to blame, etc, etc. So I spent about a half hour or so searching online for a good coding solution and found most, if not all, in my quickie search wouldn't work how I have done things. Not that big of a deal. Quite awhile back I had started to modularize certain parts of rantfest in preperation for changes I wanted to do, and one of those was how I play with time. I also have a table in the database for per user settings set up and ready to go when I make the changes. So I made these things talk to each other, and that is all happy, the only thing I am missing is a function to switch DST on and off. Which for now, I am just going to keep doing manually.

I make all the changes in the code, and the time on the twitter posts is 1am, which I know is wrong. After tons of embarrassing trial and error I realized that when I pull the dates from twitter, it is already converting them...so I really was up at 6am this morning. Oh well, at least the rest of the page will be semi-accurate for now on.

Agree with DST being the stupid. I wonder how many clocks I haven't found yet to be changed. About two weeks ago, I noticed that I hadn't changed the time on my camcorder. Well It's right now.

I think we need all the caffeine we can get to stay up until 2 am to change the clocks. Problem was that after setting them back to 1 am, 2 am came up again. Were we supposed to set the clock back at 2am? Sounds like a ground hog day syndrome. Does this make sense?
