Last post I mentioned I parents let me borrow a couple of seasons of Monk. Of course, my addictive personality required that I watch every episode, but there was a shift from season 1 to season 2. They switched the theme song. It had been this wonderful little song, no words, just kind of catchy and identifiable. Now, it is a Randy Newman song. I can't speak for the collective body of Randy Newman songs, since I have only heard 2 of them, but I can say that I dislike 50% of the Randy Newman songs I have heard. While this is still a better average than quite a few performers out there, this song is played at the beginning of every episode. So I hear it a lot.
I have, however, taken steps to keep my sanity. Originally, I would just fast forward through the song, but I would inevitably go just a little too far and have to rewind. Of course, I would normally go back to far, so I would either hear part of it, or fast forward, rinse repeat until I give up. Then, I saw the power button to the speakers attached to the system playing, so every episode I would lean forward, kill the speakers while the song was going on, the bring it to life when the song was over. Worked very well, but leaning forward, there was still this small portion of the song I would hear. Having the song ingrained in my head through watching it so many times, I would just end up singing it in my head as it was silently passing on the screen...which is almost worse than hearing it. It means I know all the words. AGHHHH! So now, I have a quick switch attached to my speakers. It is close by no matter if I am kicked back at my desk (like normal) or sitting upright or anything. So now, I get to enjoy the show without dealing with the theme.
