Not currently playing any MMO, I decided to see where SWGemu was in terms of development. SWGemu is a community project that is aiming at making a playable version of StarWars Galaxies that uses the rules prior to the CU. There were two major game changes in SWG, the Combat Upgrade (CU) and the New Game Enhancements (NGE), in that order. They are far from done, but have made some awesome progress. I am almost more interested in the community than I am the game.
I was having a conversation in game with a couple of people tonight. The first guy had only played in the original SWG (pre CU, no expansions) and was trying to find out the best pvp build. The second guy was all post-NGE going on about his Jedi. Mr old school didn't know that Jedi had become a starting class that any idiot could make and Mr post-NGE didn't know that you actually had to work once upon a time to get them. I had the fun task of explaining the differences in systems. After a lot of disbelief in what I was saying, and for that matter what they were telling each other, I almost gave up. They were both convinced the game they played was the way it always was and that there was no way it could be that different without changing the world. After a great deal of frustration, genius popped into my head. I started explaining a game I used to play that was on an 8x8 board of alternating colors, both players had 16 pieces of one color on their side, and through attacking the opposing sides color they either won or lost. I asked what game I was talking about, they said chess, I said checkers. Same board, two totally different games. Neither one of them got it.
Another conversation I had earlier, was with a master Tailor. I was making some clothes, and some of them required stuff from factory crates. The only way in reg SWG to get factory crates was to have, you guessed it, a factory. But the class that makes them hasn't been implemented yet, so there are no factories. So I asked this person if there was a way to get them, because I wanted to make some of the more advanced outfits. She told me about a work around they put in so that tailors could make them. Awesome, I do this simple work around and am popping crates out left and right. I am all ready to make these advanced pieces...and they don't work. Apparently, even though I have crates, the game won't recognize them as crates. I ask her how to make them work, and she tells me they don't. I still have no idea why she had previously told me how to make them if they didn't actually do anything.
