Edible Deity - Food
Posted on: 2009-04-26 14:58:21

I saw this either on digg.com or boingboing.net. But the idea is freaky looking food, in this case, spaghetti through sections of hot dogs. It looked fairly odd, but I was nto sure which was more odd, the spaghetti through the hot dogs, or the fact that someone thought to put the two things together. Who eats hot dogs with spaghetti? Meatballs would make so much more sense. Amusingly, that was the wife's first thought when I showed her the picture later as well. So of course, we tried it.

The close up of the final product.

We bought so of those awesome, more-or-less precooked frozen meatballs. I heated them up and stuck five pieces of pasta through each.

And the plate full, just to show the volume.

This was the coolest part, cooking the pasta. Stirring them in the water looked a lot like the squids from the Matrix. Sadly, the pic doesn't show the movement.

And the end-end result.

Unfortunally, this really isn't all the tasty. Looks ok, but not all the good. The whole boiling in water to cook the pasta removed almost all the taste out of the meatballs. It is not something I can't imagine trying again, but it was fun.

boil them in the sauce

You could have cooked them in the spaghetti sauce. That way you wouldn't cook out the flavor of the meatballs and dump it with the water. Spaghetti would have cooked ok but might have taken a little longer and require closer watch. (Lost my cookies with the favorites.)

Those look a little too weird to expect the DF to eat (he gets freaked out by large strawberries...), but I think Dad's idea of cooking them in the sauce is great. I always think many sauces are a little watery anyway - might as well use it to cook pasta.

A great tip I learned about cooking pasta from the Sopranos, after you're done cooking the pasta and the sauce, combine them and let the pasta and sauce sit for about 30-45 seconds. That way the sauce coats the pasta instead of just being on it.
