My work schedule for today was 11:45-9:00, but the opener lives kind of in the middle of nowhere. We had already made provisions for me to open if she couldn't make it out. About 7:00am I get a text from my boss that I am opening. Me and the wife clean off the van...or least scraped off the ice, it was still snowing. I got ready for work and took off. It took zero effort to get to the stop sign, and normally, I would have just run the stop sign if no one was coming so I wouldn't get stopped. Anyone who knows how to drive on snow knows that stopping is your enemy. You slide when you try to stop, and can't get going again when you try to move. The goal is slow, steady movement. Of course, there was someone coming. I had to stop and it took about 10 minute to get the van to move again. Once on the main road I thought everything would be fine...but no. There is a hill between me and highway and I am following someone...and that someone paniced half way up the hill because someone was in the other lane and hit their brakes. I promptly started cursing. He was dead in the water which meant so was I.
Attempt number two involved a side street that I was worried I was going to get stuck on, but it was flat enough I thought I would give it a go. Right after turning on, I noticed a guy doing a 3 point turn around in the next intersection. I tried to go slow enough to let him finish but stay moving enough to not get stuck. Well, his 3 points turned into about 9 million, I had to stop, and I never moved forward again. By this time, I had been on the road for over 20 minutes and had not made it more than two block from the house. I reversed into a spot on the side of the road, called my boss and told him I couldn't make it to work, and walked home.
