I'm in your tubes blocking your posts. - Site News
Posted on: 2008-04-08 02:58:26

It has been just over a year since I added in spam prevention measures to the site. My methods have evolved some. Sadly, as they evolved, they also became a little more obtrusive. But my methods have also become more effective. Combined, toomucheffort.com and www.writingingreen.com have had 862 successful comments (we make posts, you make comments...and sometimes we do as well) since I started messing with spam prevention, which is about 2 comments a day. And we have had 3523 blocked comments, about 6 blocks a day. Amusingly, the wife has 3196 of these blocked comments (over 2500 of these are split between two posts). Here is a month-by-month of the blocked comments:

2007-032500
2007-042094
2007-051850
2007-061838
2007-071779

2007-12781
2008-0122143
2008-0265447
2008-0363441
2008-0466137

There is really not much you can derive from that other than it looks like 2008 will dwarf 2007 for blocked comments and that this page is finally getting noticed.

I am also vaguely leary of posting this. Nearly all of the blocked comments for this month for me have been the stories on the main page, which is why I have CAPTCHAs on all of them. I am just curious if I am now getting love on my first page, if this post will blow up with spam. Guess I will find out in a day or two...

How come I never get any? Is it the fact that Halo Scan is a pop up? Or no one loves me... lol

Hmm

I think being a pop up helps, but I think being javascript is the big one. From what I have read, most automated systems don't bother loading javascript or external files. All of the Haloscan stuff is external javascript. But even then, Haloscan could be tossing aside a lot of comments without telling you. They could have blacklists of ip addresses that they blanket ignore, or filters for content or familiar spam (you can set your own filters, so maybe). Comments are what Haloscan does. So, they attack far more aggressivly than I ever will.

The title of this post is a parody of the title of this comment, right? Where did you read it? On another note it's good that you shouldn't be getting any more spam asking if you want breast enlargements or something.

I base the lack of spam for me on the fact that I haven't updated my site in almost a year. LOL
