The Good Shepherd and more posting stuff. - 3/5 - Movies - Site News
Posted on: 2007-04-08 20:14:44

Hmmm, I am slightly annoyed. I had this large post written out about the movie The Good Shepherd, then I just had to show the wife some new little thing I had written into rantfest and accidentally closed the window with the post. Oh well. So now, all you are gonna get is this. I really enjoyed the movie, I did however think it was rather slow. You really had to pay attention to the movie to keep from getting lost...which is fairly hard at times since it is almost 3 hours long, fairly slow paced, and the lead has the amount of dialogue you would expect to hear from an extra.

Now, the new feature I broke away my posting to show the wife is a slight posting, um, feature. I have recently been obsessed with people posting via scripting. This was what lead me to the captchas recently, we had a couple of posts that were obviously getting spammed via some script. Anyways, while working on that, I realized a vulnerability in the way I handle adding posts. All the posts are in numeric order, and unless there is a captcha on the post, all that changes between the posts is a number. Since the posts are all in order, it would have been easy to set up a script that iterated from 1 to some large number with whatever crap content you wanted posted on each post and walk away. Now, in addition to that single simple number there is a random number that accompanies it.

So, yes, this new little addition could also be scripted. I am aware, and I am also aware just how easy that would be. However, that in conjuction with my next step that I am working on (might have up before morning) should put a huge dent in the scriptable posting. Sadly, the new thing I am working on could be slightly obtrusive...I am going to enforce time between posts. It will be a fairly small time, but I will feel a little more secure about my effort to kill scriptable posting.

Recall?

I take it that you don't have some sort of recall on your postings similar to the recall on our comments? (on the side: We took Simon's computer over to Uncle Andy's to have Tommy's mother board installed but he was having problems with the memory. Something about mixing 64 bit processors and 32 bit memory. Tommy doesn't think it should matter. Who knows)

Joe

Sadly, no.

But the recall only saves info when you click the Submit button. Closing the window like I did won't save the post. In that vein though, I have been looking around at some ajax stuff to see if I can figure out how to do autosaves...but since I hate javascript, that may never come to fruition.

TKT on Ajax

I keep hearing craploads about Ajax... any chance you could do a Thirsty Knowledge Thursday on it?

The wife does the TKTs

But, I will try and give a brief explanation. AJAX is a new(ish) term for a technology no one cared about until recently. It allows for certain parts of a webpage to be updated and changed without the entire page having to be reloaded. This is what allows pages like gmail.com to save drafts of the emails while you are typing. Also, on sites like digg.com, you can click the 'Digg' button to vote on a post and it will update without the page having to be reloaded. But, since it involves javascript, I am iffy on it.
