I've more or less finished another anime series. I say more or less because there are still three episodes left and two of them are sequels.
The plot of the anime, Kämpfer, is as follows: there are a select few who receive "Entrail Dolls" and are supposed to fight others of the opposite color. Just having an Entrail Doll isn't enough. The selected person must also have a bracelet (either red or blue) and must be female... at least when they are in fighting mode. As to what they are fighting for... it turns out there are these two planets (one red the other blue) that have been warring for quite some time, until moderators stepped in. There moderators thought it would be best to make humans on Earth fight the battle instead (at least that is what I got out of that.) They also thought it would be good to make where combatants must be female. As to what happens when one faction, color, wins... I don't really know. They win the war and peace is restored to the two planets. I feel a Red vs. Blue quote is appropriate here, but I can't think of one good enough for it. Now for the characters.
Senou Natsuru: The main character of the series. He specializes in being very dense on woman and having a single target for his love. He wakes up one day to find that his chest as swollen up to a D-cup and he is no longer wearing boxers but instead panties. He has now become a she. The next thing he knows he... sorry she knows is that she is being spoken to by an Entrail Plushy. The Plushy (we'll call him "Tiger" since that is what he is based on) explains about ten percent of the paragraph above (things like Kämpfer have to be female, the bracelet is proof that he/she is one and it will glow when he needs to fight and thus change into a woman, and that he is meant to help him/her out along the way.) At first Natsuru is unable to control the change between male and female, but later he is able to (which takes away from some of the comedy value.) Along the way he meets other Kämpfer whom he becomes allies with and later he runs into some moderators, of whom, are his true enemies. A bit of side notes: both male and female Natsuru are played by the same voice actress and use the same name of Senoue Natsuru. Tiger, of whom I can only assume is male, is likewise voiced by a voice actress (not the same one as Natsuru though.) In fact there are only one or two roles that I can think of where there is a distinct male voice actor for a male role.
Mishima Akane: The second Kämpfer to come into play. Unlike Natsuru, where he turns into a girl, Akane was a normal girl before becoming a Kämpfer. She however changes personalities between the two versions of herself. The timid student librarian becomes a fiery foul-mouth gunslinger when she changes into her "fighting mode." Side note: Kämpfer is German for fighter. At first she tries to kill Natsaru, but after she finds out that they are on the same side (the blue side) she agrees to help him/her out. She begins by explaining that there are two sides to the Kämpfer. Not only that but there are three different types of Kämpfer: swordswoman, gunwoman, and witch. These aren't the names that the anime gives them. Just a bad way of translating them from German. As mentioned before, Akane is a gunner (or with my translation gunwoman), and Natsuru is a witch (Zauber I think it was) of which uses fireballs as an attack. Despite being on the same side as Natsuru, Akane has a thing for threatening him/her with her gun. Not only that but she is quite trigger happy whenever she's... happy. As for the normal Akane, she often misinterprets the smallest gestures as being perverse ones. At least when it comes between her and Natsuru.
Sango Shizuka: The third Kämpfer to appear. Unlike Natsuru and Akane, Shizuka doesn't have a dramatic change to either physical or mental states, she wields two daggers connected by a chain, and is on the red side. The physical change to her is a minor one; part of her hair turns silver. Shizuka starts out with homicidal intentions for both Natsuru and Akane, but after losing to them she decides to call a truce. Despite the truce, Shizuka has a knack for screwing with Natsuru's head. With the power of the student council, she has Natsuru transfer to the female side of the school (side note: the school is co-ed, but there is a wall that separates the males from the females. So it might as well be two different schools that are right next to each other and share some of the same facilities) and is constantly causing him/her to be in awkward situations. Such things include, and aren't limited to, a beauty contest and giving her a message... and then turning around and having Natsuru grope her when Natsuru stops for a bit. Unlike the other Kämpfer, she has a beef with the moderators and is more interested in fighting them rather than Akane and Natsuru. Especially Natsuru, since she has a thing for him (and I mean him, not him/her.)
Kondou Mikoto: The fourth and final Kämpfer to make an appearance. She is at the least the last one to show up that I will talk about. For about half of the series she is off exploring the world and we know this because she sends postcards to Natsuru where ever she is currently. When she finally shows up in Japan it doesn't take very long for her to become a Kämpfer. As cruel as fate is, she is a red Kämpfer. This means that she is an enemy to her childhood friend, Natsuru, and one of her old neighbors, Akane. Once she finds this out she stops fighting pretty fast. though she has some words to Natsuru about him wearing girls' clothing. Other than that, she is a very energetic-cheerful girl. When she is in fighting mode she is a bit more aggressive and homicidal. She is like Shizuka in the fact that she is also a swordswoman, but she actually uses a sword. She doesn't bring much else to the scene other than a crazy character. Well... she does bring Noto Mamiko to the scene. (And I am the only one that gets a kick out of it.)
Sakura Kaede: for most of the anime she is nothing more than a character for Natsuru's affection... the thing is that she has a thing for the female Natsuru. Animenewsnetwork has one of the themes for the anime being yuri. If you remember correctly, yuri is slang for lesbians or stuff of the like. The anime also seems to have a theme of "Maria Watches Over Us," which translates to "an anime that has an all girls school in which all of the girls are lesbians of said school." This theme becomes apparent when the female Natsuru transfers to the girls side of the school. They even went out of their way and added Maria Watches Over Us art to one of the scenes. While it is true almost all of the girls at the school seem to fall in line with the theme, this is especially true with Sakura. Perhaps even more so since we come to learn that she loathes men and has a small group of girls to play with. It is worth noting that all of the Entrail Dolls (which I have only mentioned the one) have been showing up because of Sakura.
There are actually three different Kämpfer. I'm not talking about the swords, guns, and magic. I mean that there is a third faction, the white Kämpfer. They are actually the moderators' fighters. They're existence is to make sure that the red and blue factions continue to fight until one of them wins. There isn't much else to say about them, other than they are the group of girls that Sakura plays with... and are masochists.
I'll edit this post later with pictures and a bit more on the plushies. They are, perhaps, the most amusing thing in the series.
Entrail Plushies: Their job is to serve as messengers between the moderators and the Kämpfer... but they more or less just make fun of their masters, causing trouble for them, and are just there for shits and giggles. They have an entire episode devoted to them switching places with the Kämpfer, and as amusing as it was... it should only be watched once, maybe twice.
From left to right: Harakiri Tora (Tiger), Seppuku Kuro Usagi (Black Rabbit, messenger to Akane), Kanden Yamaneko (Electrified Linx), and Norainu Chissoku (Strangled Stray Dog.) Each one of them is voiced by a female voice actor and from my understanding they are meant to be different genders. But I have little to support that. As far as I'm concerned they are all, and intended to be, female. Despite getting their own episode, I would have rather had seen them more in the series. They have their moments, and I am sad to see the episode dedicated to them fall flat
Anyways... Final thoughts about the anime. There isn't a whole lot of action to the series, it is mostly romance and comedy. Something that is fine for me and some others, but for those lured in with chicks with weapons will be disappointed.
I forgot my favorite picture of Female Natsuru:
ENJOY IT!!
